Skills baby!

KidsZone - 16 Month, Child Assessment

16 months
December 2007

Arrival: Initially the idea of leaving his mom and staying at KidsZone was one that Cole had to warm up to. He was always interested in what was going on at his new school but he wanted his mom to stay with him and share the day. You could grab his attention when mom was holding him by saying ”let’s go see what squirrely is doing Cole” but as soon as his mom put him down and said,”ok,,Cole I have to go now and you’ll be ok” he would begin to protest and would cry for a few minutes after she left. He would begin to play with toys (the table toys, the tree house and other toys that made noises and sounds) and the balls, but at the same he would be playing and let out a little protest. During the day he would walk to the gate to see what was going on (translate) checking for the family. He bonded with Teacher Iyonna right from the start and she would open the gate so he could come into the preschool “accidentally” or hear him protest and ask if she could go and get Cole. Cole recently reached a milestone as he is now able to transition more easily in the mornings. Last week Teacher Maria actually told him let’s start our morning and let your mommy start her morning and he was fine, on another occasion when he came in he joined Teacher Maria when she invited him to “go and see some friends.” Today he reached for Teacher Maria and that was also a milestone.

Favorites and Friends: He loves to play with the balls, he throws them overhand and just stops to see if someone will go and get it for him, however if he sees the ball basket he will pick them up one by one to put them away. He liked the puzzles from the first day preferring the 3 long rectangular ones that have big knobs. Throughout the day he enjoys playing by himself, at the present time he also plays at times with Mats in parallel play. He enjoys things that he can touch, he also is an observer. He manipulates toys with his hands, turning things over and over to look at them. When Teacher Maria moves the beads on the abacus and makes them roll fast while saying “spin, spin, spin” he laughs out loud.

What He Likes: When the group gets a little too loud or boisterous he will go over to the other side of the room to watch. He will also leave if the whole group begins to bunch up around him. He especially enjoys dancing, being outside for long periods of time, and basketball on the deck ( he pushes it). He also enjoys filling containers with wood chips and dumping them out. He is an explorer, who during the course of the day walks around his school many times. He likes the magnetic letters that go on the stand up board, he loves to take the stack of buckets apart and walk away. He loves taking things apart-like the classroom, toy by toy by toy. The low table toy shelf is especially interesting to him as he will play with the toys that are on it for a few minutes and then he will knock it onto the floor and move onto the next toy. He has been observed looking back on his creation with a look on his face that says…”hmmm, what can I do next?”

When Upset: The first week or so of school, he would cry and walk around and protest. Now when someone takes his toy he will try to get it back and then cry for a moment until he is distracted or interested in another toy.

Social: Cole prefers adults first, toys and activities next and friends last. The children like Cole as they will give him a hug without being asked and when he comes to circle Iris and Zoran will say, “hi Cole!”.When the doorbell rings though he is very helpful as he points his finger and says to teachers, “Get it!”

Language: As young children possess more language understanding than they can demonstrate we know from Cole’s responses to our verbal requests that he is able to understand what we say. When we call Cole over to help us or to join in an activity he will come and try to help us, after he observes his friends doing so. He can follow a one step direction, ie. “Cole, go put your napkin in the garbage please” or he will come and get his diaper changed if you ask him.

Activity Level: His activity level is medium- normal as he cruises around the room watching his friends in the play and looking for Teacher Iyonna.

Rhythmicity: He appears to function well with the current schedule and he is aware of what is expected of him during the daily routines like snack time (he will get in a chair), diaper changes (he will meet you at the gate), circle time he will sit for a while, (especially if the story is interactive or has some animals or sounds in it) etc.

Approach and Withdrawal: He likes to be held and cuddled especially in the evening when waiting for his family. He likes Teacher Said a lot and will respond to his requests, when he first started at KidsZone he would play with the toys while sitting with Said and now he just kind of passes him by. Teacher Said now says “hi” to him while he is playing and Cole just looks up and keeps it moving. He will still sit with him if he can catch him at the right moment.

Sensory Threshold: His sensory appears to be stimulated by his sense of touch, he enjoys smashing his food around while eating, he especially loved doing a collage with small soft fluffy balls.

Attention Span/Distractibility: He can be found book browsing the small soft books.
